The Mythology of Pisces
According to a Roman legend, Venus and Cupid (her son) had to escape fire breathing Typhon by swimming through the sea. According to some, they were carried to safety on the backs of 2 fishes, though the more common variation is that the were both turned into fishes after Venus called for help from the water nymphs. In order not to lose each other in the dark depths, they tied themselves together with a length of rope. This legend is thought to be the reason why Syrians would not eat fish.
An alternative legend is that an egg fell into the Euphrates river and some fish rolled it back to the shore. Doves then sat on the egg, and it hatched to reveal Aphrodite, who had the fish immortalised in the sky to thank them.
